With COVID-19 Pausing The Hollywood Movie Schedule, 93rd Academy Awards Odds Emerge

It may seem like way too early in the game to release odds for betting on the 93rd Academy Awards, but with the motion picture industry taking a timeout to deal with the spread of the Coronavirus, the potential is there for a finite amount of selections to be available for Academy consideration.

Movie fanatics that are also keen on entertainment betting are in for a treat, as oddsmakers have offered odds on the winners of next year’s Oscars. Sure, options are limited as only about a fourth of scheduled movie releases actually hit theaters so far in 2020. Sportsbooks have solved that problem by offering odds on darn near every film that has been released or is at least in post-production right now.

The Academy is considering removing its seven-day theatrical run requirement for next year’s ceremony, according to The Observer. Movie buffs and betting experts will wait for that decision with bated breath and ponder the odds that have been offered so far.

Obviously, a large majority pf these films will not be nominated for best picture, and under normal circumstances, with a full slate of theatrical releases, most of these films would not be considered for merit by the Academy.

Still, that doesn’t take the fun out of pondering the chances of Halloween Kills winning best picture. Sure, it’s the eleventh film in the Halloween franchise and is the third part two, but a kid can dream.

The films Dune, Tenet, and West Side Story seem to be drawing significant positive attention from critics, and the directors of two of those films find themselves among the favorites to win the best director Oscar next year.

Stephen Spielberg is a near odds on certainty to get a nomination for best director for his work on West Side Story, a remake of the 1957 play and 1961 film. If he were to win, it would be his sixth Oscar. If you bet on him right now to win, a wager of $100 will earn a payout of $150.

West Side Story is positioned for a December 18 release date, falling just before the submission deadline for 2020 Oscar consideration. Now, embroiled in the midst of a COVID-19 caused quarantine, it is difficult to project that far into the future.

According to the following odds, Tenet, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and West Side Story will be included in the nominees for best picture in next year’s ceremony. Dune has an even betting chance to enter the fray as well, which will mark the third attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel to the screen.

It is also likely that a foreign-language film will be nominated for best picture, but the odds are very low that it will win. With the category expanded to include ten films in recent years, the Academy could struggle to find that many worthy contenders.
