Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow now lead Heisman odds, Trevor Lawrence loses ground

Coming into Week 5 of the 2019 college football season, teams are solely focused on playing well and executing on the field. However, that does not stop the talk of Heisman Trophy hopes.

Before the season started, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (+260) and Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence (+260) were running a two-man race to the Heisman.

But after the first month of college football, things are looking much different. Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts and LSU QB Joe Burrow now lead the Heisman Trophy betting odds at +300 apiece. Before the season, their odds were only +1200 and +5000, respectively.

With Hurts currently leading the Heisman betting odds, there’s a chance Oklahoma produces three-straight Heisman quarterbacks that did not start their college careers as Sooners.

Hurts is an Alabama graduate transfer. The last two Heisman winners, Baker Mayfield in 2017 and Kyler Murray in 2018, transferred to Oklahoma from Texas Tech and Texas A&M, respectively.

Tagovailoa is not far behind his contemporaries, still posting +400 odds of winning the Heisman. Lawrence, on the other hand, has dropped down to +2000 odds of taking the hardware at the end of the season.

Clemson’s prodigal son has already thrown more interceptions, five total picks, in the first four games of 2019 than he did in all of 2018.

The first non-quarterback on this list is Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor. The winner of the 2018 Doak Walker Award as the best running back in college football, Taylor chose to attend Wisconsin over Harvard to better prepare for the NFL.

In between his hot yoga sessions and writing philosophy essays, Taylor is averaging 7.6 yards-per-carry with seven touchdowns in 2019, earning him +650 odds.

Other notables players to increase their odds of winning the Heisman include Ohio State QB Justin Fields going from +1200 to +900 odds and Georgia QB Jake Fromm from +1800 to +1500.
